Pre-Op Guidelines
Eye Surgery Center At The Biltmore

Diet:

  • Light meal – until 7 hours prior to scheduled surgery start time. Sips of water only may be taken for up to 3 hours prior to surgery
  • No alcohol the day of surgery; no gum or candy

Medication:

  • Take USUAL medications the morning of surgery with a small sips of water as close to their normal administration time as possible
  • No antacids (Rolaids, TUMS, Maalox, Pepto, or Carafate)

Diabetic Patients:

Insulin Doses:

Morning Surgery:

  • Skip the morning dose before surgery (unless instructed otherwise by the surgeon or anesthesiologist)
  • Administer the usual morning dose at home with a meal immediately following surgery

Afternoon Surgery:

  • Administer ½ dose of the insulin in the early AM with light breakfast (black coffee, tea or clear juice, with one slice of dry toast)
  • Allow 10-12 oz. of clear liquids 7 hours prior to surgery

Dialysis Patients:

  • Keep regular dialysis schedule unless otherwise instructed

 

POST-OP Cataract Surgery Instructions

If not already done, make sure to fill any cataract surgery prescriptions at your pharmacy as soon as possible.

Post-op eye drops:

If a patch was not placed over your operative eye, start the eye drops below at bedtime on the night of surgery. If a patch was placed over your operated eye, start the eye drops below after Dr. Kilpatrick removes your patch the day after surgery.

  1. First Week: One drop of PRED-GATI-KETOR in your operative eye three (3) times per day until Dr. Kilpatrick directs you otherwise.
  2. Second Week: One drop of PRED-GATI-KETOR in your operative eye three (3) times per day until Dr. Kilpatrick directs you otherwise.
  3. Third Week: One drop of PRED-GATI-KETOR in your operative eye two (2) times per day until Dr. Kilpatrick directs you otherwise.
  4. Forth Week: One drop of PRED-GATI-KETOR in your operative eye one (1) time per day until Dr. Kilpatrick directs you otherwise.

Do not touch the tip of the bottle with your finger or to your eyelid or eye.
