Scottsdale Eye Employees Spreading Holiday Cheer to the Less Fortunate
Scottsdale Eye Physicians & Surgeonsâ lead technician Shanta McFarland is making the season a little brighter for one Phoenix family. McFarland partnered with Phoenix Childrenâs Hospital to âadoptâ a family of six, including the familyâs five-year-old child who is receiving treatment at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. McFarland is soliciting help from family and friends to raise enough money to purchase gifts off a wish list for each individual in the family including the childâs grandmother, aunt, younger sister and two younger cousins. She also plans to buy grocery store gift cards and donate household items. Not only is McFarland bringing joy to this very deserving family, but sheâs also taking time to reflect on her personal life, recognizing she has a lot in which to be thankful. âI am sograteful for my life, my friends, and my family, and I want to bring some joy to a very deserving family during this holiday season,â she said. McFarland hopes to deliver the gifts by Dec. 5. Learn more about ways you can help children and their families at Phoenix Childrenâs Hospital by visiting: phoenixchildrensfoundation.org.

Better Technology, Better Vision â i.Profiler and i.Scription
During your regular eye exams at Scottsdale Eye Physicians & Surgeons, we will run a variety of tests to determine the health and strength of your eyes and vision. During these tests you will undergo a refraction test, or a test to let your ophthalmologist know exactly what prescription you might need in glasses or contact lenses. As the ophthalmologists here at Scottsdale Eye are on the forefront of exam technology, we employ the Zeiss i.Profiler combined with Zeiss i.Scription lenses to provide our patients with the highest possible prescription accuracy. Refraction Tests Before i.Profiler Before the Zeiss i.Profiler, ophthalmologists would use a phoropter, or a very large, very bulky piece of equipment that is always associated with eye exams. This piece of equipment somewhat resembles a large mask, and is encompassed with multiple lenses to measure refractive error. The patient would sit behind the phoropter and provide the ophthalmologist with feedback based on which lenses gave them the best vision.
icare Tonometer â No More âPuff of Airâ
A comprehensive eye exam includes a variety of tests and procedures to evaluate your eyes. During these tests, your Scottsdale ophthalmologist might test for visual acuity, color blindness, and a host of eye conditions, including glaucoma. Through all of the tests and procedures, itâs usually the âpuff of airâ test that can cause the greatest apprehension among patients. Rest assured, the âpuff of airâ test is not done at all by our eye doctors. During an eye exam, the ophthalmologist will commonly run a test to determine the pressure inside the eye, or intraocular pressure. This evaluation can help tell the doctor whether you have glaucoma or not. If your eye pressure is abnormally high, you could be at risk for glaucoma.

Poor eyesight can be more then just a burden; it can change your entire lifestyle, from your ability to drive yourself around to reading the recipe for dinner. Living with Poor Eyesight Low vision impacts all of us as we age, and yet many individuals can successfully manage poor vision with a simple pair of reading glasses. For others, poor vision can be caused by macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, or diabetic retinopathy, and may need more advanced methods of management. Here are some wonderful tips from our ophthalmologists with over 40 years of experience in improving patientâs vision:
6 Scary Causes of Blindness That You Should Be Aware of This Halloween
A recent poll found that Americans rank, “losing eyesight,” highly among the worst health concerns that could affect them. Yet only half report having insurance that covers eye exams. In the public opinion poll conducted by the Alliance for Eye and Vision Research, respondents ranked, âquality of life,â as the possible negative consequence associated with vision loss. Of the 40% of respondents that ranked vision loss as incredibly concerning, less then halfsought regular eye exams. Diabetic Retinopathy Diabetic retinopathy is defined as a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes. Specifically, this complication is caused by too much sugar in your blood, which damages the blood vessels that nourish the retina in the eye. Over time, and without proper treatment, the blood supply to the retina can be completely cut off and vision loss can result.
